MISCONCEPTION

BIOLOGY : PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Misconception

Source of misconception

True science

Photosynthesis stops when respiration occur, and vice versa

  • Teachers teach both topics separately and do not explain the relation between photosynthesis and respiration
  • Students' experience told that photosynthesis never happen during night because there is no sources of light. So, they thought respiration will take over

· Respiration and photosynthesis actually happen in the same time. Respiration happens throughout the day, including during daylight when photosynthesis is happening.

· Respiration never stops. It happens continuously when organism is alive.

· Photosynthesis process only happen when there is light energy, it’s when energy is converted into chemical energy (ATP) to be used to split water molecules to get hydrogen, the oxygen is released through the stomata.

· Oxygen, as the byproduct of photosynthesis will then be used in the process of respiration.
